Call for Speakers

Be A Speaker!!!

Yes, you too can be a speaker at SDRIW!

We welcome speakers on a variety of topics, at a variety of levels.

Topics do not have to be technical -- we welcome legal and social discussions too.

See our past presentations for some examples.

We are (usually) a friendly audience. You can use SDRIW to try out a presentation before giving it to a tougher crowd. We'll give you helpful advice afterwards if you want (maybe even if you don't want).

See below for things we don't want in presentations.

Topics

You can suggest any topic that you are prepared to talk about. However, our members have suggested some topics they'd like to hear about. See below for the list of suggested topics.

Duration

Presentations can be as short as twenty minutes. We recommend 40 minutes. The maximum is about an hour.

Audience level

All levels of presentation are welcome. Some of our members are experts, others are novices.
We like to keep all members interested. If all of our presentations are highly advanced, we lose interested from the less technical people. If all of our presentations are beginner level, we lose interested from the advanced people. So we like to have a nice mix.

What we don't want in presentations

SDRIW is not a venue for sales pitches and vendor promotions.

Presentations on a particular product are acceptible if they focus on the technical aspects of the products, and how it can be useful to the attendees. Preferably this will be from somebody who is actually using the product.

We prefer presentations that talk about the technology in general, and then talk about specific products.

Be warned that some of our members are highly savvy, and will not be very tolerant of B.S. presentations, sales pitches, and snake-oil.

How to Apply

If you think you'd like to do a presentation, first check the calendar to see what days you think you would like to present. Also, you might want to look at past presentations to see if your topic has been discussed recently. (We welcome updates on old topics).

Then, send e-mail to speakers@sdriw.org. Be sure to include the following:

  • Title of the talk
  • Your name, title, and organization as you would like it to appear in the meeting announcement.
  • A brief (3-4 sentence) blurb describing the talk, which will be used in the meeting announcement.
  • Anything else you'd like to say about your talk that will get our attention.
  • Contact information in case we want to discuss it with you, and so we can confirm with you before the meeting.
  • Any special A/V requirements.

The following we have standard, and you don't have to request in advance: video projector, VGA hookups for laptops, internet access (including wireless), a PC and Mac.

Audio feeds, wireless mikes, second projector, are all special requests and we need to know in advance.
